Error 80048820 is a common one with MSN Messenger 7.5, here are some known ways to solve it so far.

Symptoms

When you start MSN Messenger, you are unable to sign in, the following message is displayed after the sign in process is interrupted.

"Sorry, we were unable to sign you in to the MSN Messenger at this time.
Please try again later.

To let us try and troubleshoot the problem, click the Troubleshoot button."

Causes
  • The system clock may be set incorrectly.
  • The Dynamic Link Library (DLL) softpub.dll, may not be registered on the system.
  • Internet Explorer may be using an invalid proxy server.
Resolutions
  • Double click on the clock in the taskbar and make sure the system clock is set correctly.
  • Register softpub.dll using the regsvr32.exe tool.

Click Start, and then click Run.
In the Open dialog box, type regsvr32 softpub.dll and then click OK.
    Restart MSN Messenger.

  • Remove any Internet Explorer proxy server settings

In Internet Explorer, click Tools and then click Internet Options.
In the Internet Options dialog box, go to the Connections tab.
    Click LAN Settings...
Untick the Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dial-up or VPN connections) checkbox.
Click OK and OK again Internet Options.

Do you have a program called AdMuncher installed? It will cause some error, not sure if it's this one, can't find where I put the info.

Cleoman i have 3 recommendations for that error , cause it's real problem seems to be a slow connection (msn not sending the ticket data correctly)

1- Try repairing the connection using repair and try again
2- try restarting the connection and try not using ur a tcp/ip protocol if ur using ppoe.
3- Do not open multiple instances of msn messenger and sign in with different accounts , use one to sign in with all ur accounts

If none of the above or the recommendations made by daniel work , get a faster connection :P

Thanks for the screenshots, especially the second one. It looks like you might have something blocking the connection, can you answer these questions:

How do you connect to the internet? (eg. dial up, DSL, cable)
Are you on a network/LAN?
What firewall and anti-virus software do you use? (eg. Zone Alarm)
What add-ons or patches do you use? (eg. Messenger Plus!)

I'm having the same problem. I took a look at the screenshots and I have the same error messages. I don't have any add-ons and the only firewall i'm using is the servie pack 2 firewall. I have a wireless network in the house, my housemates both have laptops whereas i have a desktop. They can both access messenger 7.5, however i can't.
Please Help

Another question: do you have a proxy set in Internet Explorer?
